Hats by Dorothy Herbert

(This piece is in response to a writing prompt about hats. Anyone who knows Dorothy can hear the smile in her voice as she offers this pithy observation!)

HATS

Way back in my youth women didn’t travel without proper garb.
Therefore, going to college and returning one wore a hat on the train.
I am not sure about busses.
These hats were not caps but real for-sure hats.
They were not ornate necessarily but covered the greater portion of one’s head.
